Homes and building design have always interested me. As a young man, I assisted my father with residential construction projects, including the subcontracting and construction of new homes. (This early hands-on experience with the construction process has proved invaluable to me in my design work.) Later, I worked as a Building Designer for a lumber distributor and then as a free-lance designer for a registered architect. My familiarity with the building envelope - including windows, doors, insulation, and building techniques - landed me a position with the local power company as an Energy Specialist. (As a result of this experience, most of my homes exceed the national Model Energy Code by at least 30%.) Before getting married in 1990, Newport News Shipbuilding recruited me to do design work. It was at the shipyard where I refined my drafting and problem solving skills and expanded my knowledge of CAD. During this time, I continued working on different residential designs, including the designing of my own home. After my eldest daughter was born in 1995, I left the shipyard to start Homesite, Inc. Shortly after starting my business, I was offered membership in the American Institute of Building Design (AIBD). For the past several years, I have been privileged to serve as a member of the board for the Virginia AIBD and have become a nationally Certified Professional Building Designer (CPBD).
